There are endless valid ways to describe counselling and the information you read about treatments presented on this site is based upon my training and experience. One counselling or therapy form is never a 'Silver Bullet' to all ills for all people. Some individuals respond best to counselling when recalling and expressing how they feel about events, the past, present and future or their situation from their point of view and/or at an intellectual and/or conscious levels. Counselling might appear a longer process but in some circumstances it is an essential treatment. There are general professional guidelines about the number of sessions needed to resolve personal problems which I follow, ultimately which treatment is suitable for you or how many sessions will be required depends on your personality, preferences and the presenting problems.

The following goals may appear similar to other listed treatments (on my site), however for sudden, prolonged and severe circumstances counselling precedes other therapies:

  •       Management of stress, anxiety, depression.
  •       Elimination of limiting habits, phobias and other self-defeating behaviours.
  •       Overcoming bereavement pains.
  •       Resolution of self-image conflicts.
  •       Overcoming separation distress and pains.
  •       Promotion of self-confidence, assertiveness, self-motivation, self-organisation and efficacy.
  •       Resolution of work, social and/or relationship related stress.
  •       Choosing a better personal, social or career path.
  •       Improvement of interpersonal relationships at home, at work and socially.
  •       Improving decisiveness and taking control of personal affairs.
  •       Dealing with anger and jealousy difficulties.
  •       Elimination of lack of self-esteem, lack of concentration, shyness, guilt, panic attack.
  •       Promotion of a positive mental attitude.

Counselling tends to be an analytical, behaviouristic and client lead treatment technique. Often counsellor's role is to encourage clients to talk about their difficulties and listen without a great deal of input. At other times counselling is an essential or the appropriate way forwards, e.g. Eating disorders, Drug (substance abuse) dependency and Gambling addiction. Some personal challenges require practitioners with specialised skills and training (psychology).

Most stressful periods in life, correlate with fear, anxiety or grief in relation to past, present and future concerns. Grief is not exclusive to mourning the death of someone and this sense might be triggered at Retirement, Redundancy, Moving home, Career and/or Financial change, Ageing, Ill health, Separation, Nearing end of life.

The word depression has emotive connotations and the medical profession uses the term clinical depression when problems are severe and/or prolonged (symptoms markedly differ). Being depressed is decidedly different from a week two of low moods or lack of motivation.

Clinical depression does not favourably respond to alternative or complementary medicine practices, I counsel people with mild to severe emotional symptoms and adher to rigorous professional ethics to ensure client's welfare and am an experienced counsellor. However, I am NOT a medical doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist.
